What Is A2P 10DLC?
What Is A2P?
A2P is an industry term that means “Application to Person” and indicates that a platform or an automated service is the source of a text message. A2P SMS was introduced by Verizon in 2019 and other carriers soon adopted what is now the required industry standard for safe, secure, and fast SMS messaging.
What Is 10DLC?
10DLC stands for 10-Digit Long Code, but while 10DLC phone numbers may look like standard 10-digit local numbers, they differ in that they’re registered with carriers specifically to support A2P messaging and ensure greater protections for users.
10DLC & A2P Phone Number Benefits & Features
While A2P 10LC is the mandatory industry standard for sending SMS and MMS messages, the additional step of verifying your business or organization with the carriers increases trust in your number and your business. A vetted 10DLC SMS number has an optimized path for SMS success with less message filtering, higher deliverability, and faster send speeds.

Types of A2P Registration
To register for A2P messaging with The Campaign Registry (TCR™)—the organization that vets businesses for A2P registration on behalf of the carriers—you should be prepared to answer questions regarding your business (also called Brand Registration) and the types of messages you intend to send (Campaign Registration).
While the size of your business and the length of time you’ve been in business play a part in overall trustworthiness, the more the carrier’s know about your business and the messages you intend to send, the higher the trust in your business and SMS campaigns.
There are three types of A2P registration: Sole Proprietor, Standard, and High-Volume Vetted. Each offers a different level of trust with the carries and, as such, delivers corresponding speed and deliverability rates.
If you do not have a tax ID number or an EIN you will be given a “Sole Proprietor” A2P registration. Because it is harder for the carriers to verify your business without a tax ID or EIN, this level of A2P registration receives the slowest SMS send speeds and is restricted to the lowest daily message limits. Also, those registered as Sole Proprietors do not have access to EZTexting’s link shortener and tracking tool.
It’s recommended you register as a Sole Proprietor only if you do not have a tax ID number or an EIN.

1,000 messages a day
Standard A2P registration is free and is ideal for customers looking to send less than 1,000 messages a day.
If you have a tax ID number or an EIN you must complete either Standard or High-Volume Vetted registration. Failure to do so will result in delivery delays, blocked messages, and re-registration.
A high-volume vetted A2P account is perfect for businesses and organizations looking to send more than 1,000 messages per day.
High-volume registration is available with EZ Texting’s Boost and Scale plans and comes with a one-time $90 setup fee.
Unless you’re a sole proprietor, you’ll also need to have your TAX ID number handy, and, in rare cases, EZ Texting will request an EIN confirmation
letter to further verify your business. This registration process is mandatory, and enacted by the carriers to maintain trust and security.

Frequently Asked Questions
Both are textable 10-digit numbers with a local area code. The high-volume local number is upgraded, A2P-enabled, and registered, which means it is recognized and approved by mobile carriers. These 10DLC SMS numbers increase your trust level with the carriers and results in faster delivery speeds and better deliverability.
A high-volume local number is an A2P enabled number, or upgraded 10-digit local number, that allows local numbers to send group text messages at faster speeds with better delivery rates. A2P is an industry term that means “Application to Person” and indicates a platform or an automated service is sending a text message.
No. You can use the same number when upgraded to a higher level of A2P registration.
A2P 10DLC registration is a process that allows businesses and organizations to send text messages from 10-digit long code phone numbers (10DLC) to US mobile phone subscribers. 10DLC numbers are the same type of phone numbers that people use for personal calls and texts, but have additional security features.
A2P registration is required by all US mobile carriers in order to reduce spam and improve the deliverability of legitimate SMS text messages. Businesses and organizations that do not register for A2P may have their text messages blocked or filtered by mobile carriers.
The deadline for A2P 10DLC registration was August 31, 2023. However, businesses and organizations that have not registered by this deadline will still be able to register, though they may experience delays in having their registration approved.
Due to EZ Texting’s long standing relationship with the carriers, our customers often see A2P registrations approved within 24 hours.
Best practices for sending A2P 10DLC messages are the same for sending all SMS messages:
- Get opt-in consent from those on your list before sending them text messages.
- Only send text messages that are relevant and timely.
- Do not send spam or unsolicited text messages.
- Use an A2P-verified 10DLC phone number to send your text messages.
Businesses and organizations that do not register for A2P with an A2P platform may have their text messages blocked or filtered by mobile carriers. This can lead to a decrease in deliverability and an increase in spam complaints.
There are two main types of A2P 10DLC campaigns: transactional and promotional.
Transactional messages are messages that are sent to mobile phone subscribers in response to an action they have taken, such as making a purchase or signing up for a service.
Promotional messages are messages that are sent to mobile phone subscribers to promote a product or service.
There are a variety of different A2P messaging platforms available. Some platforms are designed specifically for businesses and organizations, while others are designed for developers. When choosing an A2P messaging platform, it is important to consider your specific needs and requirements.
When choosing an A2P messaging platform, it is important to consider the following factors:
- The types of text messages you plan to send
- The volume of text messages you plan to send
- The features and functionality you need
- Your budget
